World Oceans Day Photography Show at Pannikin

June 8 is World Oceans Day; it’s also the start of a new Ocean Art photography show at the Pannikin in Encinitas. Stop by for a coffee, check out the art, and get a glimpse of what lives in our local Southern California waters.

Part of my mission as an underwater photographer is to show people what’s in the ocean. World Oceans Day is the perfect opportunity to share photographs of the amazing things I’ve seen underwater with my friends and neighbors.

Several award-winning photos are on display, including New Kelp from the 2009 Best of Nature Photography Show.

The Pannikin is located at
510 North Coast Highway 101 in Encinitas. The exhibition is free and to the public. Ends July 4, 2010.

Photos Published in “Wonders of the Sea” Book

Three of Derek Tarr’s underwater photographs, including the Industrial Red Urchin, were just published in the new book Wonders of the Sea, Volume Two: Marine Jewels of Southern California’s Coast and Islands, by Living Sea Images.

This stunning 112-page coffee table book takes readers on an underwater voyage to the waters off the Southern California coast from Santa Barbara to San Diego and offshore to all eight of the Channel Islands. The book features over 100 beautiful natural history photographs of marine life, and is narrated by residents who describe their intimate relationship with the ocean.

Exhibit at LeucadiART Walk, Sunday August 30th

I will be exhibiting underwater photography at the LeucadiART Walk this Sunday from 10am to 5pm. This event is hosted by the Leucadia 101 Main Street Association, and features local art including musical and dance performances, children’s activities, and more.

My display will be located at the corner of Leucadia Boulevard and Highway 101 on the northwest corner of the street.

This July and August, I will be participating in the San Diego Oceans Foundation Dive-a-Thon to raise awareness and funding for their marine education and pollution prevention programs. Underwater Photos at the San Diego County Fair

I am honored to announce that three of my underwater photographs are on display in the Exhibition of Photography at the 2009 San Diego County Fair.

You can see the ribbon-winning photo of the tiny (4 cm) tropical striped triplefin here on the website, or better yet head out to the fair and see all three prints in person.

Photos Featured in Reef Check Annual Report

Two of Derek’s photographs, Tropical Striped Triplefin and Portrait of a Garibaldi are featured in the 2008 Reef Check Annual Report.

“The beautiful underwater photographs compliment the layout of our report, and we are pleased to have them included” said Jennifer Mihaly, Program Manager for Reef Check. “It was great working with such a talented photographer who shares our goals for protecting the marine environment”.

Founded in 1997, Reef Check is a non-profit organization dedicated to marine conservation, especially tropical coral reefs and California’s rocky reef ecosystems.

Accepted to Best of Nature Show

I am honored to announce that my New Kelp photo was one of 72 entries accepted to the San Diego Natural History Museum’s 2009 Best of Nature Photography Show. More than 2,300 photos were submitted for consideration.

Best of Nature is an international juried show, for nature-based abstract and impressionistic images from the world around us.

The show opens at the Natural History Museum on June 27th, 2009 and will remain on public view until September 13th.

Underwater Photography Class at NCSC

I will be offering a Fundamentals of Underwater Photography course at North County Scuba Center in Encinitas on February 28th from 10am to 4pm.

This class will be individualized to meet student needs. Topics will include a review of camera controls, setup, the mechanics of a good exposure, composition, technique and much more.

On Display at the Encinitas Civic Center Art Gallery

Derek’s photographs will be on display at the Civic Center Art Gallery in the Encinitas City Hall from January 30 until February 27, 2009, as part of the 2009 Civic Art Program.

Please join us for an artist’s reception at the Civic Center on Wednesday February 11th from 5 – 7pm. Catering for the event will be provided by Today’s Pizza and Salad.
